WHEN IS TRAINING A COST AND NOT AN INVESTMENT?
When training is: - done only as a band aid approach to on-going performance problems or challenges.
- done without re-enforcement, inspection or accountability.
- generic and does not apply to specific business needs.
- done too late.
Training is not a luxury. The price of effective training is an investment in future success, competitive position, market penetration -- often survival. Failure to develop people will cost far more than any investment made in training people to excel, even exceed, in job performance.
Employee longevity requires dedicated, productive and effective employees. Most employees want to do a good job. When these well intentioned people fail to perform to a manager's expectations, it can always be brought back to a question that everyone asks sooner or later, "How do I - or how can I - do my job better?" Every manager needs to ask, "Could my company, organization, department, division, be more successful (no matter how you choose to define success) if the people were better trained? Training - the right training done in the right way at the right time with the right frequency - will add significantly to bottom line profits.
Short-term thinkers want to see a direct return on every training dollar spent. This isn't feasible. Too many direct and indirect factors impact a company's bottom line. Personnel performance is not an exact science - but job performance is a significant factor in the overall success of any organization. Training investment will directly reflect in a company's people being able to perform a job more effectively and efficiently, therefore clearly impacting overall profits.
Wait, and the cost - both short and long term - will be significant.
