Affordable Accuracy...with the SHAPE of the Future!

The Gen-3 TLC Phoenix-600® High-Accuracy Mechanical Rectilinear/SHAPES Glass Cutter is feature-rich equipment designed for versatility, long-term production and close dimensional tolerance afterbreak edges that require little or no polish/grind processing. It is a low-cost, single head, simple-to-operate, easy-to-maintain glass cutting machine. Rectilinear (X-Y), circular, and curvilinear single sheet or laminated glass/substrate parts are quickly and easily processed with high afterbreak yields. The Gen-3 TLC Phoenix-600® meets high-accuracy requirements of both R&D and full-production specialty thin flat glass cutting facilities manufacturing products including:

  • Flat panel displays (FPDs)
  • Microdisplays
  • Dichroic/color filters
  • Hot/cold mirrors
  • Cosmetic mirrors
  • Heat control filters
  • Optical components
  • Lenses/viewfinders
  • Mini hard disks
  • Polarizing filters
  • Electrochromic mirrors
  • Medical imaging panels (digital X-rays)
  • Entertainment lighting gobos
  • Welding shields
  • Medical/laboratory microslides/slipcovers
  • Sensors
  • Navigation/guidance controls
  • Touchscreens
  • Camera lenses
  • Solar cells
  • Deco art pieces (stained/decorative glass)

The Gen-3 TLC Phoenix-600® operating system is PC Windows®-based and the sophisticated custom shapes cutting software seamlessly interfaces with a .dxf (AutoCAD®) platform. Circles and filet-corner rectangles are standard pre-programmed shapes. Resizing of parts is quickly accomplished with custom TLC software. An unlimited number of programs can be stored (on hard drive/floppy disks), with instant recall repeatability.

TLC's cutting process is fast, clean and dry, requiring no contaminating oil or water. The Gen-3 TLC Phoenix-600® utilizes a tungsten carbide wheel housed in a proprietary rotating cutting head assembly incorporating a single CCD camera, which allows quick setup and target alignment. This onstage measurement/inspection system is unique to TLC's glass cutting equipment. An operator can easily measure and tolerance-inspect scribes for quality assurance with this configuration. Because there are no cameras mounted on the gantry, the machine surface is unobstructed, providing easy load/unload. Off-the-shelf electronic components can be quickly replaced without sole source, middle-market pricing.

The 24"/600 mm square stage is stationary (does not rotate), and maintains overall flatness for a long period of use. Auto-calibration of wheel placement accuracy can save thousands of production dollars by eliminating lost product due to imprecise wheel placement when a wheel has been removed/replaced for any reason.

The CCD camera incorporated in TLC's unique rotating cutting head eliminates the need for gantry-held cameras, leaving the surface of the machine clear for easy load/unload and incorporation into an in-line production system. This also allows quick target alignment and on-stage measurement/inspection.

Cutting speed varies, depending on substrate thickness, part size and shape. X-Y scribe motion is uni- or bi-directional. For circular or curvilinear parts, 0.120" radius is possible on thin flat glass. The thicker the glass, the larger the required radius. The machine is capable of delivering 60 psi pressure, but far less is required to accomplish up to 0.250" cuts on flat glass/substrates, especially when using a Toyo TAP or Deep Cut carbide wheel.

TLC has been working in close conjunction with the aerospace industry to develop a refined microsheet singulation process with the Gen-3 TLC Phoenix-600®. The most recent progress has been to establish successful parameters to produce a repeatable process for cutting 0.006"/0.15 mm microsheet substrates with high yields, and is continuing research into cutting 0.003"/0.075 mm microsheet using a diamond stylus.

To reduce contamination, TLC has perfected formulas to cut through protective membranes (Nitto® tape or similar coatings) and the glass at the same time, leaving the protective layer on the glass until it is placed into its final application.

Key features of the Gen-3 TLC Phoenix-600®:

  • Greater tolerance cutting control in circular/curvilinear parts, with the advantage of encoder feedback for higher quality and accuracy.
  • Better real estate utilization of costly substrates by "nesting" of same or multiple shapes on one substrate.
  • Stationary stage (non-rotating) for rugged built and maintenance of overall flat over a long period of use.
  • Microsheet and thinner glass/substrate processing with a mechanical wheel.
  • Enhanced positioning to align circular/curvilinear, as well as X-Y patterns.
  • Elimination of cutting only continuous line shapes with step repeatability. AutoCAD® drawings (.dxf) allow a third color (red) to be used to lift the head and move it to the next designated point. [This allows for greater shape cutting capabilities including corner cropping.]
  • Free software upgrades (flash upgradeable), if no mechanical change is required.
  • Small footprint (44" x 40"/1118 mm x 1016 mm) and stand-alone design allows easy incorporation in any R&D, start-up or full production process line.

With the introduction of the Gen-3 TLC Phoenix-600®, TLC anticipates meeting the ever-increasing difficult challenges of the microsheet and thin, flat specialty glass cutting industries. No other computer-controlled, mechanical glass scriber is available in the world at a more affordable cost that will cut and perfectly align circular, curvilinear, and rectilinear parts of any combination on a single substrate.

The Gen-3 TLC Phoenix-600® is identified throughout the global high-tech glass cutting industry as the glass cutting tool of choice for simplicity and ease of operation, with installations in North American, European and Asian theaters
